An Update to the Summer of 2020
To all our dear friends and patrons,
All of us here at LST hope that you are staying safe and healthy through this tumultuous time. Like much of the rest of the country, our little mountain town is still in the early phases of reopening and it has become undeniably clear that this process will take much longer than we hoped. Even though summer is right around the corner, the modifications to life as we know it that are intended to contain and mitigate the COVID threat will be with us well into the autumn.
Our plumb line to follow since the beginning of this pandemic has been the guidance provided by federal and state authorities – the guidelines for social interaction provided by the CDC and the phased reopening plan created by Governor Inslee’s office. These two structures allow us to look with at least some certainty into the immediate future, despite the ever-evolving information about the virus itself. We have no idea what the summer months will bring, if the COVID threat will dissipate or re-surge, but we are now able to act based on the plans for mitigation and containment put forward by local, state, and federal governance.
The LST Board of Directors met on May 28th and, after reviewing the timelines and guidance provided by these authorities, came to the realization that there is no possible outcome this summer where we could create anything that even vaguely resembles the LST experience. What makes our events so special is bringing people together – actors becoming a cast, ticket holders becoming an audience – and that togetherness, those communities, are inherently the opposite of social distancing. With this knowledge, our course was made undeniably clear. It is with deep regret that the Board of Directors and I have decided to cancel our programming for the summer of 2020.
We are deeply grateful for everyone who has spent an evening, a weekend, or a summer with us here in Leavenworth. We couldn’t ask for better audiences, artists, or a more welcoming and delightful community that continues to support us during this difficult time. Our lights are dark this summer as we all adapt to meet and overcome this threat, but these actions are driven by the confident hope that we will be able to bring everyone together again in 2021 for unforgettable nights out under the stars here in the Cascades.
Take care of yourselves and those you love, and I hope you will be able to still enjoy this summer, however unconventional it ends up being. And we look forward to bringing the hills back to life with The Sound of Music and ’76 Trombones’ in 2021.
