The Sound of Music has seven roles for children – Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Friedrich, Marta, and Gretl.  These roles will be double cast, sharing performances with ten shows each.

The Day of Auditions

Please arrive at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2 at Icicle River Middle School in Leavenworth.

A parent / guardian should accompany each child to assist in completing the paperwork.  Be prepared to list all conflicts with our rehearsals and performances.  Please bring a non-returnable small school picture, close-up snapshot, or good photocopy, wallet size preferred.  Girls, please wear pants or a dress/skirt with leggings or tights so you can move when you dance.  No long skirts that impede movement.   Please wear flat shoes – no platforms or sandals without straps.

All children start the audition together at 10:30 a.m.  Late arrivals will not be admitted.  Children need to be prepared to stay for the entire audition, which may last until 2:30 p.m. For the audition children will sing “So Long, Farewell.”  Children should learn all the male or female singing parts as appropriate, since they may audition for more than one role. The words are also written on a large poster. Children may also be asked to read from the script and do some simple dance steps (Gretl does not read).

At about 11:45 a.m., we will take a break and post a first callback list.  Parents should be available at this time to meet children who are not called back. Callbacks will consist of additional singing and acting, as well as potentially being taught new music that is not from the show to test the children’s abilities to learn and perform. This additional music will just be fun, though, so it is nothing to stress over!

Von Trapp children to appear ages:  Liesl: 16-17, Friedrich: 14, Louisa: 13, Kurt: 10-11, Brigitta: 9, Marta: 6-7, Gretl: 5. Children must be at least 5 years old at the time of auditions.

The audition schedule is as follows:

10:00 a.m.  Children’s check in.  Parents complete paperwork. Bring a wallet size photo.

10:15 a.m.  Audition room open for children.  No parents in the audition room.

10:30 a.m.  1st Session Auditions.  (no late arrivals admitted)

11:45 a.m.  Some children will be excused when a callback list is posted.

12:00 p.m.  Callbacks.

To follow:  Final callback, if needed.

Note:  Those auditioning for Liesl should not attend the children’s audition, but instead sign up for an individual adult audition slot and be available Sunday for callbacks. If an actress would like to be considered for both Liesl and Louisa, she will need to attend both auditions.

Children who wear glasses may wear them during the audition; however, they should be aware that glasses may not be worn during performances.  Braces are not allowed for performances.  Children should not change or cut their hair without permission of the show director.

If cast as one of von Trapp children, the actor must be available and within a few hours of Leavenworth during the run of the show to perform for the counterpart von Trapp in the other cast in an emergency.

All von Trapp child auditioners will be notified, either way, by mail within 2 weeks of auditions.
