SYNOPIS
From the screen success "Some Like
It Hot" SUGAR comes to the stage with the same memorable characters
that made the movie so popular. Joe and Jerry, two musicians down
on their luck in Chicago, by chance witness a gang rub-out in the
Clark Street Garage ordered by Spats Palazzo, a notorious Chicago
hood. Spats and his boys chase after Joe and Jerry, determined to
silence them as witnesses. Desperate for a quick way out of town,
Joe and Jerry hear about jobs available for a saxophone and a bass
player, which are their specialties. Coincidently, the band is scheduled
to leave at once for Florida. There is only one problem; the band
is all female. As Joe and Jerry they haven't got a chance, but with
a bit of costuming, padding, makeup and slight voice adjustments,
they become Josephine and Daphne. They are hired by "Sweet
Sue and her Society Syncopators" and away they go! Once with
the band, Josephine and Daphne keep up the charade to preserve the
getaway, and Osgood Fielding, the befuddled millionaire, immediately
falls in love with Daphne. Comedy ensues. The entire production
is a comic farce and all of the issues below are a part of the comedy
of the show and are not portrayed as dramatic situations with the
exception of the opening gangster shooting in the Clark Street garage
which quickly switches to a classic comic getaway.
SEXUAL CONTENT/MATURE THEMES
Sugar Kane is a sexy Marilyn Monroe type
character and the girls in the band are flirtatious. One song
is about naughty old men in need of love. (Naughty old men need
love too.) Joe & Jerry
are dressed as gals during the depression era and carry out the
charade including traveling with the band, performing with the
band and dancing with guys.
LANGUAGE
The word damn is spoken by characters in several instances and is
in the words of one song in the show.
DRUGS/ALCOHOL
Several characters are drinking during the performance.
VIOLENCE/SCARINESS
There are machine guns at the beginning of
the show and gangsters die on stage.
